The Government of Zambia’s Lusaka Sanitation Program aims to ensure the sustainability and expansion of the water and sanitation system, while enhancing the capacity of Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company Ltd. (LWSC) to effectively manage these services. The program consists of four components: Climate-Resilient Sewerage Infrastructure Development, Decentralized Sanitation and Hygiene Education, Institutional Support and Capacity Building, and Programme Management.
We were appointed to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the water supply and sanitation systems, including on-site sanitation, wastewater management, faecal sludge management (FSM), stormwater drainage, and solid waste management. This included reviewing engineering designs for sewer networks, pump stations, and FSM units, as well as assessing water and wastewater treatment plants and stormwater systems. Additionally, we evaluated local community awareness of sanitation, health prevention, and hygiene practices to support the promotion of WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) in the region.
We carried out an institutional capacity evaluation as part of the Lusaka Sanitation Program to see if the pertinent institutions were prepared to oversee and carry out the suggested actions. Based on this assessment, we provided targeted recommendations for capacity-building measures to enhance institutional performance and ensure the long-term success of the program. Our efforts contribute to the development of a sustainable sanitation framework, incorporating robust Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) systems and improved infrastructure, which ultimately drives the program’s objectives forward. Additionally, we prepared an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to ensure the expansion of sewer networks and FSM facilities aligns with environmental and social standards. With a strong focus on improving rural water supply and strengthening sanitation systems, the Lusaka Sanitation Program represents a major advancement in WASH infrastructure, benefiting both urban and rural communities in Lusaka.
