Mesurado Industrial Facility and other Fisheries Infrastructure, Monrovia, Liberia

The Government of Liberia is executing the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project to enhance fisheries management, boost livelihoods, and improve income opportunities for both the Government and local communities. A main component of the project is the development of the Integrated Artisanal Fishery Landing at Mesurado, which aims to create a modern infrastructure to support industrial fish landings and the export of high-value fish species and products.

The project encompassed the construction of an Integrated Artisanal Fisheries Landing hub, deep-water berths, dredging activities, quarry operations, and the reclamation of approximately 3 hectares of land along the lee breakwater. In addition, the project involved refurbishing access roads, building new structures, and developing other key supporting facilities. These developments will not only enhance the physical infrastructure for industrial fishery operations but also help promote sustainability in the fisheries sector.

We have conducted a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), along with preparatory studies that include, topographic, wave modelling, bathymetric surveys, and the creation of preliminary designs for the Mesurado Industrial Facility and surrounding fisheries infrastructure.

These efforts focus on ensuring that the fisheries infrastructure is both sustainable and resilient. By prioritizing environmentally friendly solutions, the project aims to foster a balance between development and environmental preservation, ultimately improving the socio-economic conditions of Liberia’s fisheries sector while promoting long-term sustainability.
