Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) for the Rehabilitation of the Tailings Dam (TD-10) and Overburden Dump (OB-54) in the Copperbelt Province in Zambia

In Zambia, the Government has introduced Zambia Mining and Environmental Remediation and Improvement Project with the objective of mitigating the environmental degradation and reducing health risks to local population. We were appointed to carry out the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment study for the Rehabilitation of the Tailings Dam (TD-10) and Overburden Dump (OB-54) in the Copperbelt Province in Zambia.

The project involved a comprehensive range of tasks aimed at ensuring environmental sustainability and compliance with both National and World Bank environmental regulations. Our team conducted a comparative analysis of national legislative requirements and the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Safeguard Policies, alongside environmental and social screening and scoping studies.

As part of the project, we performed an Alternative Analysis based on the findings from the ESIA studies to determine necessary mitigation strategies and enhancement measures. Site-specific Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) were developed to guide the project’s sustainable implementation, emphasizing climate change mitigation, biodiversity preservation, and ecosystem management.

Our team also played a key role in preparing Bills of Quantities (BoQs) for the implementation of the ESMPs, designing an Occupational Health and Safety Plan, establishing a Contractor Code of Conduct, developing a robust Grievance Redressal Mechanism (GRM) as well as formation of a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Plan to ensure long-term sustainability and compliance with environmental regulations.

Further, we actively participated in technical and stakeholder workshops and contributed to capacity-building and knowledge transfer initiatives. Throughout, our focus on sustainability, environmental auditing, and waste management was integral to meeting global standards for environmental stewardship.
